Course Description

Beginner Hindi: Students are divided into three age groups:
Three to five year olds learn through songs, rhymes, stories, and crafts. Hindi alphabet recognition is acquired through play, verbal repetition, etc.
Ages six and up build up their vocabulary and are also introduced to reading and writing.
Hindi classes for youth and adults are introduced to fundamentals of Hindi language through more structured curriculum.

Beginner Plus students are introduced to maatra, reading and work on enhancing their vocabulary.

Intermediate I and II students work on sentence structure though Hindi text books and grammar based drills.

Advanced and Pre-Certificate students work with advanced Hindi material to develop better verbal and written communication skills.

Certificate Hindi students register and study the prescribed course work for the Government of India Hindi Certificate Course. An examination is given in May of each year. Successful students receive a certificate.

All other Indian languages, when offered, follow beginner through advanced level curriculum as outlined for Hindi.

Vocal Music, Harmonium & Keyboard -(Sundays): all ages and levels. Instruction in North Indian classical vocal music technique and training in the theory of classical vocal music system. The aim of the Harmonium and Keyboard classes is to gain knowledge of the essential elements required for mastery of each instrument.

Kathak: all ages; beginners and intermediate students are taught elements of Kathak techniques. Their dancing skills are developed through improvisation, rhythm, abhinay (mime) and foot-work. They are all prepared for short dance performances.

Bharatnatyam: Students are introduced to advanced hand gestures, footwork, head movements and abhinay. The class follows the traditional curriculum of this classical dance form.

Folk Dance: all ages; beginner and intermediate. These dance classes will explore the various steps and movements of the colorful, lively and diverse folk dances of India.

Indian Popular Dance: all ages and levels. The main aim of the class is to introduce students to the popular Indian dance styles and to prepare them for various types of performances.
Tabla:
This course is designed for both beginners, beginner plus and for intermediate students . The course will focus on the following aspects of tabla: Basic Beats and Rhythms, Proper Posture, Hand Clapping Verbal volume and recitation of the bols, caring for the tablas, and role of tabla as an accompaniement instrument.

Dramatics: all ages; This class will offer students the opportunity to become familiar with and perform favorite Indian stories in Hindi. The class will impart understanding of Indian heritage and culture while encouraging self-confidence and teamwork. At the end of the semester, students will present the play, complete with set, costumes and music.

Indian Art Class: all ages; This class will focus on learning the traditional art forms including Alpana, Rangoli, Fabric Painting, Greeting cards, Mehndi, Drawing and Painting.

Yoga: all ages; Hatha Yoga is taught from a standpoint of its benefits of achieving longevity and good health. This course will focus on Yoga postures which promote the free flow of energy through the system, This course will also study meditation, as a source of deep relaxation, to build stamina and to be more sensitive to our environment. Most students of Yoga are seeking a source of complete fulfillment, but others who suffer from excesses such as obesity, rage or anger management problems are encouraged to join.
